To qualify for the vid big bang 2018/19 you (or you and your friends) must create, by end of day Feb 21st 2019, one of the following:
- A new fan vid to a piece of audio that, after editing, is at least 5 minutes long not including adding any credits before or after the audio.
- Many fan vids intended to be watched as a whole where the total length is at least 7 minutes e.g. vidding a whole album. This can incorporate previously created and published vids but the majority of the work (duration-wise) must be new.
FAQ:
- Can I collaborate? - Collaboration is fine, welcomed and in some cases necessary! Multi-editor projects are allowed provided they either collaborate on one vid or there is a collection of vids by many vidders with a consistent intentional theme and not just a random collection of new vids arbitrarily chosen to be together.
- What about credits? - If credits are not part of the audio track you are vidding to, you cannot extend your vid to be over 5 minutes by simply adding credits. Even credits that have a (different) musical backing, if it's not part of the story you are communicating with the vid it doesn't count. Not to be a buzzkill but the spirit of the challenge is long-form work. In future years, if this goes well, the minimum length for a single vid may increase to prefer truly long-form vids and sets of vids in a theme. At that point the credits issue may become moot.
- What If I vidded the same song multiple times? - That totally counts as the different takes on the song would then be part of the whole narrative. Yes, looping the song also works but looping the same edited vid just to make it longer doesn't.
- So if I can use old vids as part of it, can I make a sequel/prequel vid and submit it as a new work? As long as newly vidded material is more than 50% of your new work then yes. You would submit the whole as a single work to be watched as one continuous narrative.
- How long is too long? There is no such thing as too long.

I found out about this too late for this year, but I actually do have an aspirational project of about 8 minutes in the "one day" bucket. Might you be running this challenge again next year? Is it too early for you to know?
ETA: And I just realised your post says that it's hopefully the first of an annual challenge. Hooray!
That aside, I think the idea is awesome and can't wait to see what people make.
